An alternative high school that bridges progressive learning with life beyond.

the pathways school is inspired by fellow parents who believe in a new educational paradigm, but think…

We love our natured-based / child-led / progressive school, but where can my child go when they’re older?

We believe in education beyond grades, tests & rigid curriculums, but what if my child wants to go to university?”

I’m not sure uni is right for my child, but how can they thrive in a world that values conventional markers of success?

As a high school educator of 20+ years and a father of 2 young children, I created The Pathways School as my answer to our shared vision - to honor our children’s unique brilliance and full humanity, not just in their younger years but throughout their lives; not just to shape their own paths but to shape our wider world.

the pathways school core pillars

Personalized
Curriculum

The Pathways Curriculum enables students to ‘choose their own adventure’, one that’s inspired by their own passions and aspirations, opens up alternative life pathways, and meets global university requirements.

Real-World Readiness

We believe the best way to prepare for a world we are yet to imagine is to cultivate free-thinking minds that are wired for possibility. We believe the outside world is the best classroom, be it through community service, internships, entrepreneurship or adventure.

Ecological
Living

Through communal living, holistic wellbeing, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, we hope to create a microcosm of a healthier world, where we live in right relationship with ourselves, our planet and each other.

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

– William Butler Yeats

Q&A

  • At The Pathways School, we believe that success takes many forms, and education should inspire students to explore their passions and discover their unique place in the world. While university can be an excellent option for many, it won’t be the only path to fulfillment and professional success at Pathways. That’s why we will collaborate with students to design individualized curricula that prepare them for whatever life path they choose—whether it’s higher education, a first job, or launching an entrepreneurial venture that aligns with their passions.

A Curriculum as Unique as You Are

Rather than emphasizing standardized tests and one-size-fits-all benchmarks, we will let students take the driver’s seat in shaping their education. With support from a dedicated team—including career and wellness counselors, subject specialists, and the local community—we will create pathways that empower students to pursue their ambitions while meeting the requirements for a high school diploma.

    • For Students Pursuing University: If your goal is to attend university, your curriculum will be tailored to meet global entrance requirements, including California universities, the UK system, and European standards. You will build the skills, knowledge, and experiences that will help you thrive in a university setting.

    • For Students Exploring Alternative Pathways: If university isn’t for you, we will connect you with meaningful work experiences, internships, and mentorships to prepare you for success in the professional world. Learn fluent Spanish, master horse riding, become an expert windsurfer, or delve into the art of wine-making—your education will become the stepping stone to your first job or entrepreneurial dream.

    Real-World Connections and Mentorships

Our small school size and personalized approach will allow us to cultivate strong connections with leaders, entrepreneurs, activists, and specialists from diverse industries. Through workshops, projects, and internships, you will gain hands-on experience that builds your confidence, expands your network, and gives you a head start on your future.

    Inspiration and Guidance

Inspiration will be a core value at Pathways. As a member of the Royal Geographical Society, I will draw on my access to a global network of trailblazers—ecologists, explorers, innovators, and more—who will regularly visit and share their journeys with our students. These encounters will spark curiosity and show you what’s possible when passion and purpose drive your path.

    Celebrating Curiosity and Lifelong Learning

We will celebrate curiosity, adaptability, and the transfer of knowledge across unfamiliar settings. Did you know that adults are expected to change jobs an average of 12 times in their lifetime? By connecting your subjects to your passions, rather than to arbitrary standards or exit exams, you will develop the skills to learn and thrive in any environment—now and in the future.

    Your Journey, Your Story

Imagine writing your university entrance essay about mastering windsurfing in the Mediterranean, creating a sustainable farm-to-table initiative, or designing an art exhibition inspired by your love of history. At Pathways, your story will be uniquely yours, and we will be here to help you tell it.

This approach will ensure every student has the opportunity to explore their passions, build meaningful skills, and make informed choices about their future. Whether it’s university, a first job, or charting an entrepreneurial path, we will support you every step of the way.

  • At The Pathways School, we will create a truly individualized educational experience through our "choose your own adventure" style curriculum. Each student will embark on a unique pathway to graduation that aligns with their passions and interests while ensuring they meet rigorous university entrance standards, including those for the California university system, UK universities, and most global institutions.

    How It Will Work:

    A Personalized Learning Journey:

Every student will collaborate with a dedicated team, including teachers, a university counselor, and support staff, to design semester-long projects that reflect their interests. Whether a student wants to explore Art History, Marine Biology, or Wine-Making, these projects will integrate core academic subjects like math, science, social science, languages, and arts to ensure no requirements are missed.

    Alignment with Global University Standards:

While the curriculum will be deeply personalized, it will also be meticulously structured to meet international university entrance requirements. For instance, our programs will satisfy the "A-G" subject requirements for California universities and will be flexible enough to align with UK and European systems such as A-levels or equivalent standards.

    Expert Guidance and Mentorship:

Our faculty will include experienced educators with backgrounds in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and university admissions. This expertise will allow us to design assessments, benchmarks, and portfolios that reflect the rigor and depth universities expect, all while maintaining the flexibility of a student-led approach.

The Benefits of a Student-Designed Curriculum:

    • Intrinsic Motivation: Students will be more engaged and motivated when their education aligns with their interests, fostering a deeper love of learning.

    • University Readiness: A personalized curriculum combined with interdisciplinary, project-based learning will help students stand out in university applications. Their unique portfolios and narrative assessments will highlight critical thinking, creativity, and real-world problem-solving skills.

    • Small School Advantage: With a low student-to-teacher ratio, we will provide individualized support to ensure every student has a clear pathway to their goals.

    Beyond University Standards:

At Pathways, we won’t just prepare students for university; we’ll prepare them for life. Our emphasis on sustainability, emotional intelligence, and internships will give students a head start in shaping their careers and making meaningful contributions to the world.

By combining the freedom of a student-led curriculum with the structure and rigor of university requirements, we will ensure that every graduate of The Pathways School is not only university-ready but also future-ready.

  • At The Pathways School, we believe that grades are a poor indicator of future success and an even worse driver of genuine learning. Instead of assigning arbitrary letters or numbers, we will focus on continuous feedback and individualized benchmarks that provide a clear, meaningful picture of a student’s growth, strengths, and areas for improvement.

    Our Approach to Measuring Progress:

    Continuous Feedback Loop:

Learning at Pathways will be a dynamic process where students are encouraged to "fail well." This means embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth, without the fear of exam pressure. Feedback will be provided in multiple forms:

    • Daily Oral Feedback: In-the-moment, actionable insights during discussions, project work, and collaboration.

    • Weekly Written Feedback: Regular reflections on progress and next steps to ensure students stay aligned with their goals.

    • Quarterly Formal Reports: Comprehensive narrative assessments that document achievements, skill development, and progress toward benchmarks.

    Individualized Benchmarks:

Progress will be tracked using personalized goals that align with university entrance requirements and the student’s own aspirations. Benchmarks will be set collaboratively at the start of each semester, ensuring they are both rigorous and meaningful. These benchmarks will be tailored to the student’s unique project, reflecting real-world skills and interdisciplinary learning.

    Narrative and Portfolio Assessments:

Rather than grades, we will document growth through:

    • Narrative Feedback: Detailed accounts of a student’s learning journey, including how they approached challenges, collaborated, and innovated.

    • Portfolios: A curated collection of projects, research, and achievements that will showcase their learning, creativity, and critical thinking to universities or future employers.

    Why This Will Work:

    • Focus on Learning, Not Performance: Research shows that grades often encourage short-term memorization and discourage risk-taking. In contrast, continuous feedback fosters intrinsic motivation, curiosity, and resilience.

    • Better Preparation for the Future: Universities and employers increasingly value critical thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving—skills that are better captured through narrative feedback and portfolios than traditional grading.

    • Clear and Transparent Communication: Our system will provide students, parents, and universities with a comprehensive, well-rounded view of the student’s progress, strengths, and readiness for the next stage of their education or career.

By removing grades, we will create a learning environment where students are free to explore, innovate, and grow at their own pace, supported by a community of mentors who are deeply invested in their success. At The Pathways School, progress won’t just be measured—it will be celebrated, shared, and built upon.

  • At The Pathways School, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be woven into the very fabric of our curriculum and campus culture. Our commitment to sustainability, holistic well-being, and community service will create a learning environment where students actively contribute to building a balanced and thriving world—for both people and the planet.

    Living the SDGs on Campus:

    Sustainable Practices:

    • Water Solutions: Our campus will incorporate innovative water conservation and recycling practices to minimize waste and encourage mindful resource use.

    • Sustainable Eating: We will emphasize healthy, locally-sourced food options and teach students about the impact of their eating habits on the environment.

    • Green Living: Through gardening, composting, and eco-conscious building design, we will model ways to live in harmony with the earth.

    Healthy Living:

Sustainability isn’t just about the environment—it’s about creating a culture of balance and wellness. At Pathways, students will engage in practices that prioritize physical, emotional, and social well-being, helping them develop habits for a thriving life.

    Integrating the SDGs into Learning:

    Project-Based Education:

Every student project will be an opportunity to engage with the SDGs in a meaningful way. For example:

    • A marine biology project could focus on SDG 14: Life Below Water, exploring sustainable fishing or marine conservation.

    • A community garden project might address SDG 2: Zero Hunger by teaching sustainable agriculture and providing food to those in need.

    Interdisciplinary Approach:

Students will learn to approach problems holistically, combining science, math, humanities, and arts to tackle real-world issues tied to the SDGs. This integration will ensure they understand the interconnectedness of the goals and their role in achieving them.

    Community Service:

At Pathways, community service will not just be encouraged—it will be mandatory. By helping those who struggle to help themselves, students will gain a deeper understanding of SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 1: No Poverty. We will partner with local organizations to provide hands-on opportunities that allow students to make a tangible impact, whether through supporting local shelters, assisting with environmental restoration, or teaching younger children.

    Building a Symbiotic Community:

We will strive to cultivate a mindset of symbiotic living, where students learn that their well-being is intrinsically tied to the health of their communities and the planet. Through this lens, they will understand their responsibility to nurture both themselves and their surroundings.

    The Pathways Difference:

By integrating the SDGs into everything we do, we will equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and empathy to become global citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the world. They will leave Pathways not just prepared for university but empowered to make a difference in communities of all sizes, embodying the true spirit of the SDGs.

If you’d like to follow along or support the creation of The Pathways School, we can connect in the following ways:

Hello, I’m Rob Wilson.

Growing up on a self-sufficient organic farm has shaped my educational philosophy in multiple ways. Firstly, it instilled in me a belief that the world outside is the best classroom. Throughout my 21-year career in education, I have been drawn to schools that share this philosophy, from the therapeutic nature-immersive Oakley School, to the wall-less ‘school of the future’ Green School Bali, to Alma Forest School in Southern Spain, where my 2 children currently go.

Secondly, life on the farm taught me the importance of learning how to learn. With back-to-the-land professors as parents, our family was green in more ways than one, which meant my siblings and I had to get comfortable with living life without a manual from a very young age. Asking critical questions and creative problem-solving became a daily necessity in order to just keep food on the table! It’s why Theory of Knowledge has been my favourite class to teach for over 15 years.

Finally, farm life taught me the importance of nurturing responsible global citizens. Shared a symbiotic relationship with our environment gave me a profound awareness of what it meant to live consciously, to respect the world around us, and to be in right relationship with all living beings.

The Pathways School combines my experience in high school IB education, my love for progressive learning, and my determination as a father to preserve my children’s creativity, wonder, and zest for life - long beyond childhood.
